			<title>Brachial Plexus Injury Information</title>
<description> The brachial plexus is a complex network of nerves that allow for muscle control of the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand and fingers. The nerves originate at different points of the upper spine and run across the shoulder area. When the brachial plexus is injured, the nerves become damaged and result in a host of problems, including loss of muscle control and paralysis. Surgical interventions to treat brachial plexus injuries begin with a primary, exploratory surgery to determine the extent and type of injury. During primary surgery, the plexus is surgically exposed. Nerves are located and evaluated by electrical stimulation to find out if they are firing or transmitting signals to the muscles of the arm and if they remain attached to the spinal cord. If a neuroma, or scar tissue, is present, surgeons may opt to clear it away by performing a procedure called a neurolysis. Common reconstructive procedures utilized by Dr. Shenaq include nerve grafting and nerve transfers. During...

			<title>Surgery Information</title>
<description> The purpose of nerve surgery is to improve how well the arm functions. Nerve surgery is most effective when it is done between the ages of 5 and 12 months. After children turn 1 years old, the surgery may not be as successful, but surgery can still help children over 5 years of age that have still not recovered from this injury. For some children, neurosurgery is not recommended or is not successful. In these instances, other procedures can be done to transfer muscles and tendons. This surgery is done by a plastic surgeon when the child is older and gives better use of the arm. After the surgery, children are usually in the hospital for two days. Four weeks after surgery you can begin doing the exercises again at home. What happens during surgery? Dr. Shenaq starts the surgery by carefully exploring the nerve network. He makes sure that all of the nerves are are in working order. If scar tissue (neuroma) has grown around the injury, Dr. Shenaq will attempt to dispose of it....
